Wi-Fi standards get renamed

Support of the next generation of Wi-Fi standard IEEE 802.11ax are coming soon. The Wi-Fi Alliance has introduced a new simplified naming system.

  • Wi-Fi 6 to identify devices that support 802.11ax technology
  • Wi-Fi 5 to identify devices that support 802.11ac technology
  • Wi-Fi 4 to identify devices that support 802.11n technology

The Wi-Fi alliance suggest that devices may use a icon to identify the generation of Wi-Fi connection. We have already seen that icons of cellular network 2G, 3G, 4G on the display of smartphones and tablets.
